Pacific Command has forward deployed USS Benfold (DDG 65, Arleigh Burke class Destroyer) to Yokosuka, Japan. USS Benfold is upgraded with Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) capability. One of several Arleigh Burke class destroyers equipped with this capability. USS Benfold is the eighth destroyer to be homeported in Yokosuka. Together with the Ticonderoga class cruisers, there are six warships that are capable of BMD based in Japan. The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force also has four Kongo class AEGIS destroyer. So in total, there are ten warships which are BMD capable. It is a significant capability.
